When was sports psychology introduced?

The study of the psychological aspects of sports and athletic performance has a long history, dating back to the early 20th century. However, the field of sports psychology as it is known today began to emerge in the 1950s and 1960s, with the work of pioneers such as Albert Bandura, who developed the concept of self-efficacy, and Adolf Meyer, who studied the psychological factors that influence athletic performance.

The first academic journal dedicated to sports psychology, the International Journal of Sport Psychology, was established in 1970. Since then, the field has continued to grow and evolve, with an increasing focus on the use of psychological techniques and interventions to improve athletic performance. Today, sports psychology is recognized as a field of study within psychology and is an important part of the training and support provided to athletes at all levels of competition.
